It's Wednesday. Tesla has spent years selling cars and home batteries as separate products. Now the car can back up the house, as long as the house already has a Tesla battery.

In today's edition:

🔋 Big Story: Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y can now power the house

⚡ Quick Hits: Google's Wyoming microgrid, data center delays, mine-water heat, sodium-ion cycles, Australia's rooftop solar

💰 Capital: Constellation and Google's 890 MW uprate deal

The Big Story
Tesla adds home backup power to Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla's newest Model 3 and Model Y now support Powershare vehicle-to-home backup through AC bidirectional charging, joining the Cybertruck, Canary Media reported. The power conversion hardware sits in the car and works with a Powerwall 3, which removes the need for a DC bidirectional charger that typically costs $6,500 to $10,000 or more.

❝

"This is us bringing the whole ecosystem together and allowing our products to complement each other."

Colby Hastings, head of Tesla Energy's residential energy business
  • Owners need a Powerwall 3 ($8,200 retail plus installation) and a $595 Wall Connector; vehicle-to-grid is not yet enabled on the two models.

  • PG&E is piloting interconnection of Tesla's AC systems, and a PG&E official said the $10,000 to $15,000 cost of DC equipment, installation and interconnection has capped participation.

  • Only California and Maryland have AC bidirectional charging rules outside of pilots, according to Canary.

  • A California projection cited by Canary says enrolling 10% of an expected 9.7 million EVs in V2G programs could cover a third of the state's grid storage needs by the mid-2030s.

Technology milestones from across the grid

Five items, from hyperscaler microgrids to flooded coal mines.

  • Black Hills Corp. signed definitive agreements to serve Google's planned data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with up to 590 MW of grid service plus about 2.1 GW of third-party resources managed through a private microgrid through 2048, the company said; service is due to start in late 2027 and Google has advanced $399 million for long-lead equipment. • SynMax estimates nearly 40% of US data center projects scheduled for completion this year could miss their targets by more than three months, Power Engineering reported, with Oracle's Wisconsin campus waiting on a restarted transmission approval and its New Mexico gas pipeline running six months late. • Seaham Garden Village in County Durham, England, began heating about 750 homes this month with 18-20°C water from former coal mines, in a 6 MW scheme run by the Mining Remediation Authority; about a quarter of Great Britain's homes and businesses sit above old mines. ThinkGeoEnergy

  • Macsen Energy, an Indian startup, says its sodium-ion cell with a Prussian white cathode kept 90% of its capacity after 1,000 cycles and passed 1,500 cycles in lab testing. pv magazine

  • Australia's National Electricity Market produced 4,780 GWh of solar in September, up 21.5% from a year earlier, with rooftop systems supplying 2,975 GWh after a 31% jump. PV Tech

The Capital Stack
Constellation and Google sign for 890 MW of nuclear uprates

Constellation will invest $4.3 billion to add 890 MW of uprates across 11 existing nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google, Utility Dive reported, with the first uprate due online in 2028. A separate 15-year agreement covers 2,700 MW of supply across PJM, and the deal includes load-shaping and demand-response provisions. Constellation called it a direct response to PJM's Bring Your Own Power proposal amid a 6.8 GW PJM capacity shortfall.

Policy Watch

  • MISO asked FERC to approve by Oct. 19 a plan to speed its roughly 71 GW DPP-2022 legacy queue cycle, offering a penalty-free exit before an Oct. 20 decision point, raising the withdrawal-cost trigger to 50% of network upgrade costs from 35%, and capping final-phase restudies at one. State regulators and developers back it, Pathway Power protested, and MISO says the cycle otherwise faces at least 18 months of delay. Utility Dive

  • New York regulators approved a two-year statewide utility pilot of meter socket adapters, which connect solar, batteries and EV chargers at the meter and can avoid panel upgrades, with applications opening June 1, 2027. pv magazine USA

  • The Bureau of Land Management will offer 35 geothermal parcels covering 113,330 acres across eight Idaho counties in a Nov. 17 lease sale, adding federal acreage as next-generation geothermal developers look for sites. ThinkGeoEnergy
