India awards pumped-hydro contracts and its first grid-scale flow battery
India's Solar Energy Corporation (SECI) awarded 1,344 MW of pumped-hydro storage to Tata Power, Greenko, and Torrent through a competitive reverse auction, while startup Delectrik won a separate tender to build a 100 MWh vanadium flow battery at the giant Khavda renewable park in Gujarat. The pumped-hydro developers take long-term power-purchase agreements on a build-own-operate basis. Energy-Storage.news reported that the Delectrik award, made with partner Bondada Engineering, is the country's first utility-scale flow battery and is due for deployment next year.

Greenko won its full 720 MW bid, Torrent took 300 MW, and Tata Power was awarded 324 MW of the 660 MW it sought, all on long-term PPAs.
Delectrik's 100 MWh vanadium redox flow battery will sit at the 30 GW Khavda park in Gujarat, which already runs about 10 GW of solar and wind, under a tender from NTPC Renewable Energy.
India has 11 pumped-hydro projects totaling 15,870 MW under construction, with another 8,140 MW approved and awaiting a start, according to the government's Press Information Bureau.
The Central Electricity Authority's national plan projects India will need 74 GW / 411 GWh of storage by the 2031-32 financial year, split between batteries and pumped hydro.

European developers lock in long-term tolls to make merchant batteries bankable
Two deals signaled that Europe's merchant storage market is edging toward contracted revenue. Return and Engie agreed a 10-year toll on 55 MW/220 MWh of Spanish BESS, while EnBW took 300 MW of Zelestra's 500 MW/2,000 MWh Italian project under a long-term toll, according to Energy-Storage.news. Tolling deals hand developers predictable cash flow and give lenders something to underwrite, a structure that has been scarce across Europe's largely merchant battery fleet.

Johannes Pfeifenberger on planning the grid for surging large loads
Johannes Pfeifenberger asked, "How do you plan a grid for this???", pointing to a new ESIG report on transmission planning for large loads. His argument: planning frameworks built for incremental growth cannot connect data centers and other big loads quickly while keeping long-term transmission cost-effective.
The report's eight recommendations run from better visibility into transmission headroom, advanced transmission technologies, and planning for load flexibility and co-located resources, to consolidated planning, scenario-based least-regrets methods, proactive multi-driver planning, development zones for large loads, and interregional transmission.
