It's Tuesday. Most grid batteries shipping today share one chemistry, and most of the cells come from one country. Samsung SDI just sold a gigawatt-hour of a different recipe, made in Indiana.

The Big Story
Samsung SDI lands 1 GWh deal for US-made NCA grid batteries

Samsung SDI will supply 1 GWh of its Samsung Battery Box 1.7, a containerized storage system built on nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) cells, to utility and independent power producer Alpha Omega Power, pv magazine USA reported. All cells and modules will be made at Samsung SDI's StarPlus Energy plant in Kokomo, Indiana, with delivery expected before the end of 2026, according to the company.

❝

"American-made ESS from Samsung SDI will play an important role in AOP's continued growth. This second agreement strengthens our domestic supply chain supporting the next generation of energy infrastructure."

Paul Choi, CEO, Alpha Omega Power
  • The containers are headed to Alpha Omega Power projects in the WECC and ERCOT regions that are scheduled to begin construction in 2027.

  • The deal brings Samsung SDI's contracted volume with Alpha Omega Power to 1.5 GWh, following an earlier supply contract signed in 2025.

  • The SBB 1.7 delivers 17% higher energy density than the SBB 1.5 in the same 20-foot footprint, the company says, and injects fire-extinguishing agent directly into individual modules.

Quick Hits
Technology milestones from across the grid

From meters on the wall to a data center with its own grid.

  • Landis+Gyr won a contract to deploy more than 3 million advanced metering endpoints for an unnamed US investor-owned utility, including its Revelo meters, network and head-end system, a deal whose value was not disclosed. PR Newswire

  • Gingerah Energy referred Project Meridien, a proposed 1 GW off-grid data center hub about 100 km south of Broome in Western Australia, for federal environmental assessment, with plans for 5,000 MWh of batteries, about 5,200 MW of solar and 1,500 MW of wind on an internal microgrid. Energy-Storage.news

  • US wind turbine orders reached 2.8 GW in the second quarter ahead of the tax-credit deadline, according to Wood Mackenzie, which still expects 39 GW of new onshore capacity by 2030. Utility Dive

  • NextEra Energy added 2.4 GW of battery storage to its backlog in the third quarter, about 65% of the 3.7 GW it added overall, lifting its total backlog to about 36.7 GW. Mercom India

The Capital Stack
Clean energy cancellations outrun new US investment by $8.2 billion

E2 counts $86.6 billion in clean energy projects cancelled, closed or downsized since January 2025, against $78.4 billion in new announcements, pv magazine USA reported. Tesla's $9.9 billion Texas solar factory makes up about 93% of the $10.6 billion in new manufacturing investment, so the rest of the factory pipeline is thin.

Also in the capital stack:

Australia had A$32.5 billion of generation and storage projects under construction or at financial close, according to the Clean Energy Council's first-half 2026 report, with 13 battery projects totaling 1.6 GW and 6.5 GWh reaching financial close in the half. RenewEconomy

Policy Watch

  • Massachusetts is targeting 5 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 10 GW by 2035, with 1.6 GW already online and projects such as Flatiron Energy's 250 MW battery near Boston, which closed $850 million in financing, giving developers a long-dated demand signal in a congested grid. Canary Media

  • Singapore's Energy Market Authority plans to grow energy storage from about 350 MWh to just over 1 GWh by 2030 as peak demand of 8.6 GW could reach 9.9 to 13 GW within five years, and it will study a second interconnector with Malaysia of up to 2 GW, a hedge alongside a larger gas fleet. • CISA released a strategic plan through 2030 that promises help for operators on OT asset visibility and intrusion detection, plus data-driven guidance on third-party and supply-chain risk, which bears directly on utility OT networks. Utility Dive

Chart of the Day
Grid battery failure rates fall 97% as deployments soar

Chart: US grid battery failure rate falls as cumulative deployments rise, 2016 to 2025

The annual failure rate for grid batteries fell more than 97% from 2016 to 2025 while cumulative deployments rose 250-fold, according to Canary Media's analysis of EPRI incident data and SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence installation counts. EPRI calculated that grid battery units now fail at a rate comparable to oil-filled transformers.
