The Big Story
Seatrium’s remotely run floating platform exports power to Singapore’s grid.
Seatrium, the Singapore offshore and marine engineering group formed in 2023 from the Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Offshore & Marine merger, delivered the first power from its Floating Living Lab into Singapore’s national grid on July 3, in what POWER Magazine reported Monday is a world first for a remotely operated, grid-connected floating distributed energy resource. The platform pairs LNG-fired gas engines with a stacked battery system co-developed with Singapore’s Energy Market Authority, dispatched from an operations center on shore. Surplus export is modest, roughly the monthly consumption of 1,500 four-room public housing flats, so the milestone is the asset class rather than the megawatts.
Critically, this milestone validates how a floating energy asset can generate, store, manage, and export power to the grid, while being remotely monitored and operated from shore.
The Floating Living Lab is the first floating asset to carry the American Bureau of Shipping’s Remote-CON notation for a distributed energy resource platform, and its shore-side operations center was engineered against DNV’s assurance frameworks.
Those credentials address the two regulatory gaps that have slowed floating power projects: marine classification of a combined generation and storage asset, and the safety case for dispatching it unmanned from land.
The Energy Market Authority describes the onboard battery stack as a testbed for validating emerging energy technologies in real-world conditions.
Seatrium says the platform underwrites a power-as-a-service model, where hosts contract for electricity and grid services instead of owning generation.

The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing holds more than $289 billion in loan authority and has deployed about $30 billion to utilities, including up to $3.26 billion to AEP Texas for roughly 2,800 miles of transmission, according to POWER Magazine. Over the same first year it restructured or cancelled $83 billion in commitments made under the previous administration.
