It's Friday. Every utility has an AI slide. Two published the arithmetic this week, and one measured it in degrees.

But first…
Upcoming Event: Global Capital in Energy Tech
Thursday, October 1, 4:00 to 8:00 PM PT. Cathay Innovation, 101 Mission St, San Francisco. Free, invite-only.
Grid Innovation Hub and Climate Capital Strategist MJ Willmore are putting 100 investors, founders, and operators in one room with Cathay Innovation, a global fund backing energy tech from the US to China. A fireside chat with Cathay partner Matthieu Soule on where cross-border capital is moving, then panels on software and AI, and on infrastructure and data centers.
The Big Story
NextEra and Santee Cooper put dollar figures on utility AI
NextEra Energy said an AI dispatch and outage-scheduling platform has saved customers more than $20 million so far this year, and Santee Cooper said a custom model on Google's WeatherNext should help it avoid $100,000-an-hour spot purchases. Both spoke at a September 2 roundtable hosted by Google Cloud, which sells them the platform, so treat both numbers as company figures. NextEra's tool, Grid Composer, runs across Florida Power & Light's fleet on roughly half a trillion data points a day, per NextEra Analytics president Rich Argentieri. Santee Cooper's agent is not yet in production.
"On the coldest winter day, one degree of temperature variance can cost up to $100,000 per hour on the spot market."
Grid Composer compares manual dispatch against an AI-optimized alternative. The first version took under 12 weeks, and NextEra now resells the tooling as Optos.
Optos Composer pulls generation, fuel, maintenance, trading, reserves, and storage into one model, work Argentieri said has sat with siloed teams.
Wilson said one degree of forecast error swings Santee Cooper's needs by about 100 MW an hour, and that the new tool should cut runtimes on her team's 150-plus Excel reports by 75%.

Five from across the stack, from zinc-hybrid storage in coal country to a costly bidding error.
Eos Energy and MN8 will pair 86 MW of solar on a reclaimed West Virginia coal mine with 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion and a 10 MW/100 MWh Eos Z3 zinc-hybrid system under a Google offtake, long-duration phase due 2030. Energy-Storage.news
Ansaldo Energia booked eight gas turbines for a Texas data center, its first US generation order in more than 30 years and a read on how thin the turbine order book is. Power Engineering
The American Clean Power Association reported second-quarter wind PPAs at $83.79/MWh against solar at $61.40, a record $22.39 gap, with at least 44 GW of wind in DoD review. Utility Dive
Germany's new inertia procurement could add one to two points to battery returns and was called the country's first bankable long-term storage revenue, though no grid-forming inverters are prequalified yet. Energy-Storage.news
Synergy, Western Australia's state utility, was fined AU$1.2 million after a bidding software error at its Kwinana battery pushed up wholesale prices, a rare penalty on dispatch software. Renew Economy
The Capital Stack
SB Energy files for a $5 billion to $7 billion IPO
SB Energy, the SoftBank-backed developer whose pipeline leans on data center load, filed for a US listing seeking $5 billion to $7 billion, at a valuation reported at roughly $50 billion. Terms are not final. It tests whether markets price a developer as AI infrastructure or renewables.

Policy Watch
Latitude Media worked through how much utilities actually earn from the new large-load tariffs, and how much reaches shareholders instead of offsetting ratepayer exposure. Latitude Media
