📅 Event Announcement: Grid Innovation Coffee Meetup (In-Person)
Presented by Grid Innovation Hub
Thursday, November 12 · In person at 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub, 350 California St, 4th floor, San Francisco · Hosted by Adam Shaw - 9 AM PST
Join fellow grid professionals for an in-person coffee chat on advanced technology strategies and implementations on the power grid. The conversation spans generation, transmission and distribution, grid modernization, project development, operations and compliance, and venture capital, and it runs on crowd-sourced problems rather than slides. No presentations. No sales.
Grid Innovation Hub subscribers are encouraged to register for the next session.
The Big Story
Entergy rolls dynamic line ratings across 1,125 miles
Entergy is deploying dynamic line rating across 1,125 miles of existing transmission lines in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, backed by a $13.7 million DOE award, T&D World reported. More than 600 sensors will report real-time conditions so operators can carry more power when weather allows, plus targeted substation upgrades.
"DLR gives us real-time insight into how much electricity a line can safely carry under actual weather conditions, helping us move more energy across the grid using existing infrastructure."
LiDAR-equipped autonomous drones install each sensor in less than two minutes, with no bucket trucks or planned outages.
Entergy has not published a capacity-gain figure, but says the added headroom could help defer some future transmission investment.
In a separate award from DOE's $1.9 billion SPARK program, Ameren and Pitch Aeronautics will add line sensors and rating software across more than 8,000 miles in Missouri and Illinois and reconductor two high-voltage segments, according to Ameren.

Quick Hits
Small bites from across the grid.
Batteries in Ann Arbor, a hacked solar park, and a lot of gas.
DTE Energy and sonnen launched Michigan's first residential battery virtual power plant, a two-year, state-approved pilot linking nearly 100 homes in Ann Arbor. GlobeNewswire
Huatacondo, a 103 MW solar park in Chile with a 98 MW/312 MWh battery, has sat at 0% availability since an Aug. 27 incident that grid coordinator records log as a cyberattack, a warning for operators of connected plants. ESS News
UNSW Sydney researchers modelled that smoke from Australia's Black Summer fires would have cut solar farm output by up to 70% within 50 km of hotspots and around 40% more than 150 km away. RenewEconomy
Wood Mackenzie counted 54 GW added to the US data center pipeline last quarter, with nearly 80 GW now under construction, even as more than 400 local moratoriums since January touch 18% of tracked sites. T&D World
Cleanview now tracks 110 GW of onsite gas projects for data centers, up from 20 GW last summer, as turbine cracks and fuel-supply risk start to show, Latitude Media reported. Latitude Media
The Capital Stack
GE Vernova bets $9 billion on high-voltage gear
GE Vernova agreed to buy Trench Group, a maker of bushings, instrument transformers and coils with more than 800 utility and hyperscaler customers, for $9 billion, Utility Dive reported. The deal brings about $5 billion of backlog and a new North Carolina plant that would be the first US maker of 765-kV bushings. Closing is expected in late 2027.

Policy Watch
BAAJA, the bipartisan Senate permitting bill, would end the federal right of first refusal, require FERC to mandate consolidated regional planning and interconnection, and allow ROE penalties, opening interregional lines to competitive developers; a cloture vote is set for Nov. 9. Utility Dive
Australia's energy minister Chris Bowen asked the market rule-maker to require large data centres to hold firming contracts matched to their demand, with a backstop forcing non-compliant sites to cut load, as 67 GW of projects sit in development. RenewEconomy
Maryland opened its Megawatts for Maryland auction: up to $100 million in FY2027 grants for solar and storage, awarded on lowest price per MWh, with bids due Jan. 22. PV Tech
Chart of the Day:
Surplus interconnection cuts battery hookups from 20 months to 8

About 8 months for surplus interconnection versus about 20 for PJM's standard queue, per RMI's chart. PJM has approved only two of 14 such requests, while LBNL estimates 24 GW of storage could fit at existing plant sites; PJM's Market Implementation Committee takes it up Nov. 4.
