The Big Story
Antora raises $550M to scale heat batteries for data centers and factories

San Jose-based Antora Energy closed a $550 million Series C on Thursday to expand US production of its thermal batteries, Canary Media reported. The eight-year-old company stores electricity as heat in solid carbon blocks, then releases it as industrial steam or on-demand power. It plans a second domestic factory to serve what it calls a pipeline of signed agreements with data center operators and industrial firms, customers it declined to name.

"From factories to data centers, energy is the bottleneck to industrial growth."

  • G2 Venture Partners and Eclipse co-led the round, bringing Antora's total corporate and project financing to roughly $1 billion, according to the company.

  • Its first commercial-size project, a 5 GWh battery of 200-plus modules at Poet's biofuels plant in Big Stone City, South Dakota, began booting up two months ago and will rank among the world's largest, the company says.

  • Antora designed a tariff with Otter Tail Power that pays it to charge on surplus renewable output, and COO Justin Briggs told Canary Media that planned data center projects could run five to 10 times the South Dakota scale.

Commonwealth Fusion raises another $1B to finish SPARC

Commonwealth Fusion Systems raised a further $1 billion to finish its SPARC tokamak and advance ARC, the 400 MW plant that already holds a 200 MW Google power purchase agreement and a live PJM interconnection request, Canary Media reported. That takes CFS to roughly $4 billion raised, more than any other fusion company, and puts a pre-commercial technology in a capacity market queue.

Australian home batteries pass grid-scale on power capacity

Home battery power capacity on Australia's main grid hit 7.8 GW at the end of June, up from about 1.4 GW before the federal rebate, past 7.7 GW of grid-scale, according to Modo Energy. Modo expects that fleet to double again to 15.8 GW by 2030, compressing evening price spreads alongside utility-scale batteries.
